CTEs are a powerful tool to help build logic blocks and gradually construct more complex SQL queries. If you use CTEs, your colleagues may appreciate reading your query—even a query hundreds of lines long. But, you’ll want to be careful: if heavily used within your app, CTEs are an optimization boundary. But for use cases where readability is as important as a few milliseconds, CTEs are a good choice. With CTEs, your SQL becomes readable to someone who doesn’t have detailed knowledge of the application.

Brandur’s post on “A Missing Link in Postgres 11: Fast Column Creation with Defaults”

@brandur tells us that if you read through the Postgres 11 release notes, you might see an inconspicuous addition tucked away at the bottom of the list. It’s not a flagship feature, but, according to him, it’s still one of the more important operational improvements that Postgres has made in years. The short version is that it’s eliminated a limitation that used to make correctness in schema design difficult.
